Waste Comm. eyes regional collection for hazardous waste
POSTED: May 15, 2008
The Hamilton County Solid Waste Commission had a short agenda for Wednesday evening's meeting. The commission again discussed the possibility of a Regional Collection Center for Hazardous Waste, and the aspects of a satellite site at their current location.
According to Chairman Troy Hassebrock, grants would be available for 100 percent of the construction costs, training costs, supplies and initial start-up costs through the DNR. The annual costs of running the site after the initial fees, would run approximately $14,000, and the site would need to be open at least 16 hours a month.
The commission is still looking into hazardous waste options, because officials at the NCIRGWA site in Fort Dodge, have not expressed any interest in having a regional collection site at their location.
The commission asked Hassebrock to check into a mobile service through the regional collection center at Bonderant. He said a clean up date would be set every three to four years, and county residents could dump their hazardous waste at the county site, and the mobile service out of Bonderant would pick it up. Charges were thought to be a small per capita charge, but more information was requested by the board before a decision would be made. Discussion will continue at the next meeting.
The commission has also requested bids for a new lawn mower, and is preparing to sell the old one.
Hassebrock added that he would formally like to recognize former Secretary/Treasurer Gerald Kent's retirement from the Solid Waste Commission. Kent's last meeting was in April, and he finished up his years of service in May.
"On behalf of the board, I'd like to express my thanks for all his years of service to our organization," Hassebrock said.
