Thrivent Financial supports Bethany Life's ‘Affordables’ Thrift Store

February 5, 2008
The Daily Freeman Journal
The Bethany Life Foundation was awarded a Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Care in Regions Grant for the amount of $7,450. This matching grant supports the funds raised through sales of donated goods at the Bethany Life Communities' Affordables thrift store in Story City.

Larry Elphic, director of the Foundation, reported that the Foundation had originally requested $4,500 in matching funds, but received the unexpected larger grant due to Afflordables very successful year in raising funds and the number of volunteer hours that went into the project.

Betsy Warburton, president and CEO of Bethany Life, thanked the volunteers for the amazing job they do in running the Affordables store and the thousands of hours they provide in volunteer time. Phyllis Coburn, Thrivent Regional representative and Sterling Dahl, the Story City Thrivent representative, presented the matching funds to the volunteer group at Affordables on January 15.

The Affordables thrift store raised over $30,000 in 2007 for the Good Samaritan Fund at Bethany Life. Elphic stated that these funds are "unrestricted funds that help bring financial viability and strength to Bethany Life Communities in meeting our mission of serving all individuals who come to us in need."

The Affordables thrift store is located in the Scandia Centre directly behind the NuCara Pharmacy in Story City. Donations of used, but good or better condition merchandise, are much appreciated. Persons interested in volunteering at Affordables, are encouraged to contact Denice Reisetter at 515-733-3011.
