7-inning Nightmare

Troy Banning/Freeman-Journal Webster City senior Zach Perkovich (center) wears the shock on his face following his team’s 17-6 Class 3A Substate 2 beating handed out by third-ranked Charles City Wednesday night in Mason City. The Lynx made 10 errors, leading to 14 unearned runs for the Comets.

MASON CITY — The Webster City baseball team has seen better days. Much, much, much better days. Was it nerves? Was it the opponent? Was it something the Lynx players ate before loading the bus for the long trip north? Webster City' s players will almost certainly spend a considerable amount of time over the next few days pondering what went wrong during Wednesday's Class 3A Substate 2 final against third-ranked Charles City inside Roosevelt Stadium. Entering the game with just 42 errors in 30 games — an average of 1.4 an outing — the Lynx saw that total balloon considerably after they committed 10 defensive miscues against Charles City. The Comets made them pay dearly, as they racked up 14 unearned runs en route to a lopsided 17-6 victory. "It's just an ironic thing that it would happen that way because defense has been our strength all year," Webster City head coach Matt Zoske said.
