Iowa schools get more than $5 million in federal grants

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin has announced this year's recipients of the "Harkin School Grants," a federal funding project for Iowa school districts the Iowa Democrat established in 1998.

The Iowa Department of Education said Friday it has selected 58 schools to receive more than $5.36 million in the federal funds.

Specifically, 47 Iowa schools of all sizes will receive more than $1.87 million to improve and upgrade fire safety and 11 schools will receive more than $3.48 million for projects such as replacing old buildings, updating facilities and improving energy efficiency.

Since 1998, the grants have provided $134 million in federal dollars to the Iowa Department of Education, and since most of the funding requires a local match, over $600 million has been leveraged for projects in more than 300 Iowa school districts.
