State Wrestling Tournament Day 3
February 16, 2013 - Troy Banning
9:35 a.m. – We’re in the stretch run now ...
Welcome to the third and final day of the traditional state wrestling tournament from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. I’m here for the duration; we’ve got the consolation semifinals and finals in all three classes this morning, followed by the always entertaining championship matches tonight.
Tickets for the finals always sell out in a matter of minutes from when they go on sale. Hmm ... I’ve got a seat and it’s about three steps where the Class 3A mat will be stationed. Envious?
Anyway, this morning Webster City’s Dylan Fielder will be up first in the 3A 182-pound consolation semifinal. Fielder (39-3), who came in to state ranked third, will get all he wants and more from No. 1-ranked Justin Kreiter (44-3) from North Scott.
The Fielder/Kreiter winner will advance to the third-place match later this morning against the winner of the bout between Southeast Polk’s Luke Sargent (34-7) and Linn-Mar’s Andrew Holladay (41-9).
Do you think Filelder would like another crack at Sargent? I believe so.
The losers of those two matches will shift over to the fifth-place match.
South Hamilton 120-pounder JD Rader (35-7) will be in action later today in the 1A seventh-place match against Audubon’s Brad Kerkhoff (44-7).
The schedule for this morning is consolation finals in 1A, 3A and then 2A. The consolation finals will then follow.
And another Did You Know? Top-ranked Keaton Hulett (Class 2A 195 pounds) of Creston/Orient-Macksburg will wrestle for a state championship tonight. Did you know Webster City’s Dylan Fielder pinned Hulett during the 2011 state tournament when both wrestled in 2A at 171 pounds?
