Larson vs Mossman: The Race of the Century
May 20, 2014 - Troy Banning
The race of the century ... and I missed it!
Seriously, I’m a little bummed.
I received a tweet Sunday night from recent Webster City graduate Ben Mossman (@MulletBenjammin) about a 100-meter race he and classmate Connor Larson (@conman7000) were set to compete in on Monday. Mossman told me the media needed to be notified of the impending spectacle. I kind of thought he was just joking.
It turned out the joke was on me.
Monday afternoon I received the proof that, yes, the race had indeed taken place. Larson won, I was told, although times and the gap between the two was not relayed.
I had told Mossman (again, joking) that I would show up to cover it only if there was a UFC-style stare down prior to the race. And you know what? They did it.
It. Was. Awesome. As you can see in the picture to the right, both were in what look like wrestling singlets. The only thing that could have made it better was if Mossman would have let his locks fly in the wind.
Bravo, guys. You gave me a laugh — and a lot of others as well, judging by my twitter mentions — on a Monday, something that was desperately needed.
This is a good example of a reason why I love Twitter. It’s informative, it’s fun and, yes, sometimes it’s good for a chuckle.
One last thing ... I was serious when I asked Larson if this meant Mossman — a member of the Lynx track team — was now going to return the favor and meet him on the wrestling mat.
Guys, I promise, if that happens ... I. Am. So. There.
