NCC expected to go to divisions in fall
February 25, 2014 - Troy Banning
The North Central Conference will have a new look following the departure of Algona Bishop Garrigan and Eagle Grove this fall.
Two Webster City school officials have told me that the eight-team league will be split into two divisions, beginning with the 2014-15 school year. They’ll be Large and Small School divisions, although those names haven’t been decided on yet. My suggestion would be to call them Ridiculous and Preposterous ... but that’s just me.
Here’s the likely breakdown – Webster City, Algona, Humboldt and Iowa Falls-Alden in one division; Fort Dodge St. Edmond, Clarion-Goldfield, Hampton-Dumont and Clear Lake in the other.
I’ve been told that, for example, basketball teams will still play each other twice and all games will count towards the conference standings. There will also still be an overall conference champion crowned.
Sounds good, right? But my question is this – if nothing will change schedule-wise and an overall league champ will be recognized, then what’s the purpose of the divisions?
Here you go – There will also be Large School and Small School (or whatever they will be called) conference champions. That’s right – there will be three conference championships up for grabs.
Call me old-fashioned, cynical, or whatever you want ... but, in my usually over-the-top opinion, this is nothing more than a play on the “everyone gets a trophy” idea that happens too much in today’s youth sports world. Why not have everyone be in a one-team division so everyone can call themselves a conference champion?
The Heart of Iowa Conference played with divisions for a few years, but that was when the league was comprised of 12 schools with six per division. It also didn’t publicly recognize an overall champion, just the winners of the divisions. I can’t say I was a fan of that either, but it wasn’t as eyebrow-raising as this.
In the grand scheme of things this isn’t a big deal. I know that. If the NCC really wants to crown so many champions to appease the few that wanted this then it should go for it.
I just find it foolish.
End of rant.
