Cold enough for you?

On a Positive Note ...

So, is it cold enough for you?

I must have heard that at least a dozen times over the past few days.

And to answer — yes, yes it is cold enough for me. More than enough.

In some parts of the Midwest, it was colder than the temperatures at the North and South Pole. We reached record lows in some areas of the state. But we muddle through, don’t we? That’s what Iowans do.

Despite the cold, if you take a moment to look around, you’ll see some pretty neat winter scenes. The moon the other night was brilliant and really cast a wonderful glow over the countryside.

I’ve been enjoying photos posted by friends on Facebook of sunrises, sunsets and frosty pastoral scenes. Someone posted a photo of sun dogs which he said disappeared almost as soon as he snapped the photo.

The furry friends living at my house have been a bit reluctant to venture outside and when they do, it’s not for very long.

Barney has a long shaggy coat so he tolerates the frigid temps a little better than our little lhasa apso, Buster. He wears a warm sweater most of the time. Inside, the boys tend to curl up in the warmest corners of the house — near the heat vents — when they take their afternoon snoozes.

The cold weekend gave me a chance to catch up on some reading and some television. There is nothing better than curling up with a good book and a warm blanket. Oh, and a steaming mug of flavored coffee.

My husband and I binged out a little bit on “Father Brown” mysteries on Netflix. The gentle yet curious parish priest solves murders with the help of his parish secretary. My husband said he wasn’t sure how the parish kept up its membership with so many tragic deaths.

I also had a chance to work on some rag rugs. That’s my latest passion. It combines my love of crocheting with upcycling — reusing rather than tossing out perfectly good fabric. I’ve gotten quite adept at the old-time craft and guess what all my relatives got for Christmas. Yep. Colorful rag rugs.

It’s also the perfect craft for a cold winter weekend.

So, I hope you had a warm and wonderful holiday. And for those who don’t like the winter weather — there’s hope.

Spring is less than 90 days away.
