Three reasons to attend the Festival of Chocolate

Off the Shelf

“Chocolate is

medicinal.”

-Michelle Pillow

It was the winter of 1998, and I was a bored, cranky ten-year-old not in the mood to deal with two of my least favorite words in the English language: grocery shopping. Every two weeks my mom would snag one of my older siblings and spend three hours grocery shopping. In my young mind it was the worst kind of shopping: hours upon hours pushing carts up and down aisles as Mom price-compared meat by the pound, hunted for sales located in end-caps, and rifled through bins of fruit for the absolute freshest selections. That morning Mom had informed me that my older siblings were all getting too busy; the role of Mom’s Grocery Shopping Assistant was henceforth officially mine. I already had more chores than most of my friends, and saw this as additional proof of the horrendous injustice that was my life. As Mom drove us home, I sat in the van, pouting. My mom suddenly pulled a candy bar out of her purse. “Want to split a Snickers with me?” “Sure,” I said, reaching for my half with what I thought was an appropriate amount of snotty reluctance. One bite later, my bad mood was a distant memory. Mom laughed at my blissful expression. “You’ve just got to love the chocolate/peanut ratio in one of these babies,” she said around a mouthful of chocolate. That day I discovered two important things: first of all, that my new grocery shopping chore might not be quite as bad as I’d assumed, and secondly, that chocolate held a special kind of magic. With one bite, it had transformed my whole day.

I don’t know about you, but thanks to the recent trying weather, a head cold, and the impending tax season, right about now I could definitely use the transformative power of chocolate. The good news: on Sunday, January 29 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, the Friends of the Library will host its annual Festival of Chocolate at Kendall Young Library. Tickets cost $10 each, and can be purchased at the library’s adult checkout desk. Need further convincing to attend? Here are three excellent reasons to participate:

Chocolate, Chocolate, And More Chocolate

Last year’s Festival had something for everyone, from double chocolate brownies, to chocolate-dipped bacon for the less-is-more chocolate fans. Attend this year’s Festival and we guarantee that no matter where you are on the chocolate-lovers spectrum, there will be something for you.

Enter and Win

Have a competitive streak? Or simply love to whip up something deliciously chocolatey to share? Enter your favorite chocolate dessert in one of our four categories (bars, cakes, candies, or cookies) for your chance to wow the judges and win. Two winners will be chosen in each category. An additional incentive: all entrants in the Festival receive a free ticket to attend.

Support the Library

Beyond the obvious benefits of enjoying delicious desserts and live music, your participation in the Festival of Chocolate helps the Friends of the Library support KYL and its mission. Our tightened budget means that now more than ever, every single penny counts. The Festival of Chocolate is an essential part of our yearly fundraising efforts to keep providing our community with relevant programming, activities, and materials. Do yourself – and the library – a favor, and attend the Festival of Chocolate. We guarantee, your taste buds will thank you, and so will we.
