A great slate of city candidates

This year’s city election may prove to be an exciting one. Seven local residents have stepped up to the plate to accept the challenge of running for the three open seat on the City Council. How great is that? Kudos to those seven people for wanting to give back to their community by helping to guide the city’s future.

I’m impressed that so many are willing to serve the community. As those who’ve held seats on the council or a board or commission know, it can be big responsibility and a major time commitment, requiring more time than just a couple meetings a month. There are those phone calls from local residents on any number of concerns, the hours required to review monthly reports and financial statements, and quite frankly, some very difficult decisions to make.

Each candidates comes to the table with a different perspective and from a variety of walks of of life. It’s good to have those diverse and fresh ideas, provided they keep our community moving forward, looking toward the future and planning what could be instead of what used to be.

So take the time to learn about the seven candidates – Linda Conaway, Matt McKinney, Logan Welch, Heather Kierzek, John Hawkins, Mark Gillette and Jim Talbot. In the coming weeks, the Daily Freeman-Journal will bring you information about those on the ballot – what experience they can bring to the job, how they view the council’s role in the city and what they perceive to be Webster City’s biggest challenges.

Of course, you voters have some responsibility, too. Be informed and learn all you can about the candidates and then choose the three who most closely match your views.

I know that everyone has a different idea of what’s right for Webster City. That’s OK in my book. People don’t have to agree on all of the issues and council members should be ready to speak their minds and stand up for what they believe is right.

But for me, as a voter, I’m looking for people who want to keep Webster City on the path forward – people who want to grow business, reinvigorate the workforce and expand our population. And those people need to be ready to work in an atmosphere of cooperation, collaboration and compromise to make sure that the city continues forward growth. We’ve seen what’s happened on national level when lawmakers refuse to compromise or cooperate. Let’s not let that happen here.

Good luck to all of the candidates. I look forward to learning more about you and hearing your views.

Most of all, thank you for your willingness to serve the community. Your desire to give back and make a difference in Webster City is greatly appreciated by this resident.
