Opposed to plans for Prestage Foods of Iowa plant

To the Editor:

I remember what I was doing when I learned that the Wright County Board of Supervisors was considering locating a slaughterhouse within the county borders.

I was participating in the annual July 4 Independence Day parade in Belmond, celebrating the joys of living in a free and open society where citizens have a voice in the decisions that affect our world, our communities, our environmental health, our homes. Imagine my surprise when the very next day, I attended the meeting of the county Board of Supervisors to learn about this slaughterhouse proposal, and not five hours later learned that the whole thing is considered a done deal.

I am opposed to Prestage Foods of Iowa locating a slaughterhouse in our county. (And the fact is this may affect you as citizens of Hamilton County than it will affect me, as a resident of Belmond which is located on the opposite side of Wright County.) The odors, sanitation issues, and flies will contribute to a downward spiral of the quality of life in Wright County. We in Wright County know what it is to see the richest soil on Earth littered with hog and poultry confinement operations. Is that not bad enough?

The Supervisors and the Economic Development office in Wright County seem to be pretty convinced that this is “a good fit” for Wright County. How do can they be so sure when they haven’t asked us what we think and what we want?

If, like me, you are concerned about the demise of our communities and counties, call Iowa CCI at 515-282-0484 and speak out against this bad deal.
