Dr. George Cruise Shey passed away peacefully in Cedar Falls, Iowa on February 4th surrounded by family. George was born on March 17th, 1934, in Atlantic, Iowa, the third of four sons to Daniel and Bertha (nee Cruise) Shey. He was raised on the family farm near Red Oak, Iowa, attending a one-room schoolhouse up to 8th grade. George graduated from Red Oak High School in 1953. While there he attended Boys State, was a member of the undefeated football team and was crowned homecoming king. He also participated in track and basketball. After high school he joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed in West Germany for two years. After his honorable discharge he spent his undergraduate time at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas where he met Mary Carol Haegelin, marrying in 1959. George went on to the University of Iowa dental school graduating in 1962. Thereafter Dr. Shey moved to Webster City, Iowa, practicing dentistry until just a few months ago. While in Webster City, he was involved with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Elks Club, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Toastmasters and taught the Dale Carnegie Leadership Training course. When not practicing dentistry, he combined two long time passions, travel and photography. He traveled extensively throughout the world visiting over 100 countries with family and friends including many less frequented places such as Albania, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Romania, and Uzbekistan. George particularly enjoyed Western Europe, visiting WWII battlefields and museums. A perfect Saturday was tailgating and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes which he did for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking. George is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years Mary Carol, his parents, and brothers Patrick and Mick. He is survived by their seven children: Dr. Kellee Shey (Trepp) and Daniel Trepp of Webster City, Iowa; Micheleen and Judge David Staudt of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Brian and Monica Shey of Chicago, Illinois; Mark Shey of Chicago, Illinois; Erin and Greg Tasler of Webster City, Iowa; Georgeann and Keith Ligori, Esquire of Tampa, Florida; and Dr. Michael and Teresa Shey of Webster City, Iowa, 15 grandchildren, his brother Dr. Jerry and Jean Shey, his sister-in-law Eileen Shey, many nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog, Brody. George will be remembered for his strong work ethic, gregarious laugh and endless curiosity about the world and its people

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 17 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City beginning with a rosary service at 2:00 p.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 3:00 p.m with Father Stephen Meyer officiating. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Flowers may be sent to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School.
