West Coast Truffle Fries potato chips? Jalape–o Popper chips? Library Director Ketta Lubberstedt-Arjes shows off some of the unusual chip flavors the Kendall Young Library has collected for its Potato Chip Taste Off, set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The free event will feature as many different flavors as the library staff can find, with an opportunity to vote for favorite and least favorite.

Onion and garlic flavor. Crab chip. Flaming hot style. And for something a little extra fancy, West Cost Truffle Fries.

Thursday at the Kendall Young Library, all these flavors and more will be featured in the form of potato chips.

Lots and lots of varieties of potato chips.

“We’re up to 32, I think. I bought the ketchup ones yesterday,” said library director Ketta Lubberstedt-Arjes.

The library’s Potato Chip Taste Off starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and will be a free tasting opportunity with as many flavors as the library staff could find.

The Kendall Young Library held an Oreo tasting party in November, after Lubberstedt-Arjes saw similar events going on in other libraries, she said.

“And I just happened to see, they have those Lays ‘Taste of America’ chips,” Lubberstedt-Arjes said. “So I thought, I wonder how many different potato chip flavors there are? And of course I bought more than just the Lays … Oreos are sweet, so let’s do something salty, the complete opposite.”

Visitors will get the chance to vote for the best chip flavor – as well as for their least favorite.

“In all honesty, I think ketchup is disgusting,” Lubberstedt-Arjes said.

On the other hand, “There are some that are really good. I accidentally bought pickle flavored, and that actually wasn’t too bad,” she said.

“If you’re like me, you maybe want to try one, but you don’t want the whole bag.”

Free events are planned at the library regularly. A program on “Our Neighbors, The Amish” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 7, featuring Amish baked goods.
