Warm up with winter weekend workshops

Legacy Learning Boone River Valley has three winter workshops coming up which will focus on wood, welding and creating family heirlooms, according to officials.

“Making Memories in Wood with Ernie Koch”, will be held Jan. 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Webster City High School (wood shop). Koch has previously conducted workshops for Legacy Learning BRV. Participants will have a chance to make wooden bowls and other items from wood found laying around in someone’s woodpile.

“Welding Basic Techniques with Doug Abbott” will be offered Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, at Webster City High School’s welding shop. Abbott will present welding basics techniques to give participants the foundational skills that will be built upon in future welding classes. This short session covers torch holding techniques, and various welding techniques.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday Abbott’s welding workshop “Creative Garden Welding” begins, and continues Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This workshop is also held at Webster City High School welding shop. During the session, participants will be able to take the skills learned during the basic workshop to create a piece of art suitable for a garden.

The final workshop during Winter Weekend is a new session geared towards people who have been working on family histories. “Get Grandma Out of the Attic: How to Create Heirlooms from Your Family Photos” will be taught by renowned local artist Maureen Powers. This workshop will be held Jan. 26 and 27 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Powers will be utilizing space at the Iowa Central Community College Webster City campus. Participants will learn how to restore old photographs and preserve and store them for future generations using Photoshop software.
