Legacy Learning offers new series of workshops

Menu of classes includes journaling, jewelry, cooking and heirloom restoration

April and spring are finally here and with them have arrived a new set of Legacy Learning Boone River Valley classes. From writing to cooking, creating jewelry to refurbishing furniture, the courses offer a wide range of topics.

Therapeutic Journaling

Writing to Maintain a Healthy Outlook and to Lift Your Spirits

Instructor Jennifer Berte will lead participants through a relaxing weekend of writing, including poetry. She will help participants hone their skills or find the motivation to get started on a long-awaited novel or poem.

All levels of writers are welcome, according to organizers, and writing need not be limited to the published workshop topic. All personal exploration through writing is welcome.

The sessions begin at the Hickory Cabin in Briggs Woods Park Friday night. Friday night is optional, but is a way to settle in and relax in preparation for the workshop. Berte will be available to provide one-on-one feedback if participants want to submit work ahead of time. Saturday and Sunday sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cost for the weekend is $100. Participants are encouraged to stay at one of the cabins log cabins in the park. To reserve a cabin, call (888)832-0012.

Restoring Heirloom Furniture

Tom Eddy will lead the workshop on April 18 and 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop sessions will be held at Eddy’s Wood Shop, 1084 115th Road, Boone, not far from Stratford. Tuition is $50 plus a $10 materials fee.

Participants will learn to repair that broken wobbly chair, replace a broken spindle, or even make a matching hip hugger for the chair inherited from Grandma.  Bring the project, and leave with the wherewithal to make that piece functional again. Plus, learn to match stain to make it look like it always was a part of the piece without stripping back to raw wood. Some projects may have additional materials fees.

Once registered for the class, send a photo of the project to Eddy at 1tomeddy@gmail.com to ensure that he will have all the needed supplies.

Copper Wrapped Jewelry

Mary Crystal will lead a workshop on two Wednesday nights, April 18 and 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Produce Station, 723 Seneca St.

Tuition for the workshop is $35 plus a $15 materials fee.

Participants will learn some basics of jewelry making and will hear about basic tools, findings, stringing materials, wire types and gauges. Those attending will make a simple beaded necklace attach a charm pendant and create a pair of earrings using basic techniques. Participants can bring their own beads or find some in the Crystal’s stash. The group will be using needle nose, round nose and crimping pliers which can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or any other craft store. A few pairs will be available to share at the workshop.

Paint and Sip

Heather Frank will lead a relaxed evening of painting on April 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Links Golf Club, 405 Des Moines St.

Tuition is $35 per person or $60 on the buddy plan — use the coupon code ‘Paint’ when you register two people on the buddy plan. All materials are included in the prices.

Participants will be able to paint, eat and drink if they wish. Each person will be given a canvas, tools and instruction for a fun piece of art. Each will be painting “Spring Stroll” — an image of a path with new green grass and budding trees along the way. Organizers said the session will offer lots of room for creativity.

International

Cooking — Thai

April 21 is Thai Cooking with Larb khai, fresh spring rolls, sum tom, curry chicken soup, peanut sauce, sticky rice and mango dessert. The session will be held at All Cultures Equal from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by a social hour at 4 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Tuition is $25 per person or $40 per couple. The materials fee is $25 which includes the meal for two.
