Extension hosts ‘Biggest Potato Contest’

Challenge part of Extension and Outreach Week celebration

AMES – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week is next week, April 16-21. This year, Iowa’s 100 county extension and outreach offices will host events and community service activities during the week and throughout the month of April.

Locally, Hamilton County Extension will celebrate Extension Week by kicking off their “Grow with Extension-Biggest Potato Contest.” They will provide the seed potatoes, you provide the green thumb.

Potato Challenge Contest Rules:

1.) Register and pick up your free seed potatoes during Extension Week, at the Hamilton County Extension Office located at 311 Bank St. in Webster City. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Planting instructions will be provided. This contest is open to the public and will have both a youth (under 15) and adult division.

2.) Grow your potato plants. Harvest and exhibit your largest potato at the 2018 Hamilton County Fair. Judging will be 1:00 pm on July 25. (One entry per person; entries must be grown from seed potatoes received from the Extension Office during Extension Week only.)

3.) Entries may be dropped off at the Extension Office before July 20 or brought to Floral Hall at the Fairgrounds by noon on the day of judging. Entries will be displayed in Floral Hall with the Field & Garden exhibits during the Hamilton County Fair.

4.) Prizes will be awarded to the top three places in both the youth and adult divisions.
