Two correctional officers assaulted by FDCF inmates

Both officers were treated for their injuries and released from Trinity Regional Medical Center

FORT DODGE – Two correctional officers at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility were assaulted by two inmates Wednesday evening, causing minor injuries to both officers.

Neither the officers or the inmates were identified by the Iowa Department of Corrections, which released a statement on the assault Thursday.

The DOC said that the incident began when an inmate began attacking an officer around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Another officer tried to intervene and all three were pulled to the ground.

While this was happening, the DOC said a second inmate who was in the area began kicking the officers who were struggling with the initial inmate.

Additional correctional officers were called to the area and quickly got the inmates under control.

Both correctional officers were sent to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center, where they were treated for scratches and bruises and released that same night.

The DOC said both officers returned to the prison for a short time “before being released from duties for the remainder of their shifts.”

The incident remains under investigation.
