Friday is deadline to register for dodgeball event

SHIFT Happens is back again and wants the community to duck, dodge, dip, and dive for a cause.

This year’s Dodge For A Cause event is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at Jeff Gym at the Webster City Middle School. Check-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the event runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Registration is only $5 per participant, or $50 per team.

Pre-registration is due by Friday, Feb. 9 at 3:15 p.m.

Larson would like registrations in by Thursday, Feb. 22 at the latest.

The first throw will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

There will be a free will donation for all spectators who come out to see the action.

According to SHIFT Happens facilitator and Bee-Inspired CAPP Coordinator Tiffany Larson, all money donated will go toward the making of a youth mentoring program in Webster City.

“The goal of the event is to help raise funds to be able to launch a youth mentoring program and use those funds to help apply for grants and funding to implement it in the community,” Larson said.

According to Larson, Casey’s has already agreed to be a sponsor for the upcoming event.

The Webster City Rotary After Hours organization has also chosen the event for their February civic project.

Students in grades five through 12, as well as families and/or community members are invited to participate. There will be 3 brackets: middle school, high school, and family/community combo. Teams of 8-10 players can register and pick their themes.

Team costumes and themes are encouraged.

Prizes will be awarded to the first place winners in each bracket.

This year’s event comes with a new twist.

“We have a throwdown challenge this year,” said Larson.

Registered teams will have the option to challenge other teams at the event.

Dodgeball throwdown challenges can be sent via social media.

“The first step is that they need to snap a photo or video of the team,” said Larson. “Be sure they are fun, positive and keep it clean.”

The second step is posting it on the SHIFT Happens Facebook page. Photos and videos can also be emailed to and organizers can post it.

Challengers can tag their friends and rivals they will face on the court. Challenge postings must include the hashtag SHIFTDodgeballThrowdown.

SHIFT Happens is focused on making an impact in the community to help teens be above the influence. Their efforts have been assisted by the Bee Inspired CAPP Program through Building Families, Hamilton County Public Health, Power Up YOUth, Community & Family Resources, and the school district.

This event is spearheaded by high school students active in SHIFT Happens.

“I am a part of SHIFT Happens because the groups sole purpose is to put others before yourself and I feel that’s something worth being a part of,” said Haakon Edwards, a senior at Webster City High School.

“This group was made to help other people, so why not come out and join us,” Edwards said. “We are helping others and having a great time while doing so.”

SHIFT Happens has held several events in the past few years to increase the awareness in the community on various prevention topics, including alcohol and other drugs. In 2014, the organization helped to raise funds for the HERO Board to restore The Webster Theater. In 2015, the group raised funds for the Jorden Leeper Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund.

“People should come and support this event because it’s for a good cause and will positively effect our school system and community in many ways,” said Webster City High School senior and SHIFT Happens member Hayley Thompson.

Webster City High School senior and SHIFT Happens member Lauren Swon echoed Thompson’s thoughts.

“It’s a great way to get involved and we do a lot of stuff for the community and to help others around us,” Swon said. ” I believe that people should come out and help support us by coming to this event we are putting on because it’s a great cause and it’s helping not only show your support for our SHIFTS group, but it affects people in our community and who doesn’t love a little dodge ball?”

“I think that people of all ages should come out and support the event, not only because the profits will be given to a cause that will benefit the community as a whole, but also because we guarantee that it will be a night full of fun for everyone,” said Webster City High School senior and SHIFT Happens member Hannah Miller.

The money raised during the 2017 event, nearly $1,000, went towards purchasing items that enhance student engagement and encourage inclusion with peers in the Webster City Community School District.

The funds were divided equally between Sunset Heights, Pleasant View, Webster City Middle School, and Webster City High School.
