Search criteria discussed
School board holds meeting, work session
The Webster City school board held a brief meeting Monday night, followed by a work session with representatives of McPherson and Jacobson, the firm assisting with the search for a new superintendent.
The board took an initial look at the 2018-2019 school calendar which Superintendent Mike Sherwood said was still being finalized with Webster City, Stratford and Northeast Hamilton. The tentative start date for the next school year would be on Thursday, Aug. 23 with the last day on May 23. Sherwood said a public hearing on the calendar would likely be set for the end of March.
Board members Beth Van Diest and Juli Jaycox were named to serve on the negotiating team for contract talks with the Webster City Educational Support Association and board members Linda Williams and Rich Stroner will serve on the team to negotiate with the Webster City Education Association.
Following the business meeting, the board worked with Mike Billings of McPherson and Jacobson to set the timeline for the hiring process and to establish hiring criteria for the new superintendent. Sherwood announced earlier this month that he would be retiring at the end of the current school year.
Billings said he felt interviews could be conducted as soon as the first week in March. He said his organization would meet with stakeholders on Wednesday, Feb. 7 to get their take on what they want to see in a new superintendent. The report on the stakeholders’ comments would be presented at the Feb. 19 board meeting and by Monday, Feb. 26, a list of candidates would be presented to the board.
Billings led the board through an extensive exercise to narrow down criteria for the search.
Also taking part in the work session were Eric Patterson from the Northeast Hamilton school board and Alison Weidemann from the Stratford school board.
