Healthy Kids, Healthy Community

PowerUp?YOUth encouraging residents to get involved

Power Up YOUth is celebrating Healthy Kids, Healthy Community week in Hamilton County. To celebrate, the organization will be doing a series of fun activities for the whole family throughout the week.

“Community is built when we share our stories, have fun together, take care of one another, and work toward the greater good. I think this is true in families as well,” said Kathy Getting, Power Up YOUth Coalition director. “So coalition members are encouraging families to take part in the Healthy Kids, Healthy Community campaign because we think it will be good for youth, families, and community.”

Activities begin tonight at Fuller Hall with Swim/Splash Together. Take advantage of Fuller Hall’s open swim night where families can swim for a set fee no matter how large the number.

Events are scheduled through Saturday, April 23. The events are as follows:

• Tuesday: Donate to Your Community: This event give families an opportunity to donate goods or their time. Power Up YOUth suggests visiting residents at local nursing homes (Southfield Wellness plays BINGO at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights), redeeming pop cans and giving the proceeds to charity, donating to local food banks, or bring unwanted books to Kendall Young Library for their spring book sale.

• Wednesday: Let’s Talk: Power Up YOUth suggests parents have age appropriate talks with their children about sexual health. Visit Power Up Youth’s Facebook page for suggestions on how to speak with your kids about this topic.

• Thursday: Hands Only CPR for Families: CPR classes for families are being offered on the hour, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria conference room at Van Diest Medical Center. No registration is required.

• Friday: Power Talk 21: April is Alcohol Awareness Month and April 21 is the national day to speak with kids about alcohol. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) offers age appropriate suggestions for parents to start this conversation.

• Saturday: Earth Day: Briggs Woods is looking for volunteers to help with their yearly trash and tree limb pickup. Register by calling (515) 832-9570. A prize will be given for the most unusual trash item.

• Sunday: Family dinner night: Sit down around the table without any electronic devices and talk with the family about what is happening in your life.

Take a photo doing any of these activities using the hashtag #healthykidshealthycommunity on social media and be entered to win a $20 Casey’s gift card. The winning photo will be announced on April 25. The winning photo will be selected based on originality and showcasing a family enjoying time together.
