Free tax prep offered

Appointments available in WC, Ellsworth

Free tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers is again this year available in Wright and Hamilton Counties. Federal and Iowa tax returns are prepared and filed electronically by IRS-certified volunteers.

All tax work is done by appointment. For appointments in Webster City, call 515-297-3707; weekday and Saturday appointments are available.

In Ellsworth, one tax clinic will be held on Feb. 10; contact the Ellsworth Public Library to make an appointment (836-4852).

Barb Wollan, ISU Extension and Outreach specialist and tax volunteer coordinator encourages families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to take advantage of the free tax preparation.

“The EITC offers low and moderate income working families a valuable opportunity to improve their financial situation. By avoiding tax and loan fees, these families can put 100 percent of those funds to use in ways that build financial security and help them reach additional financial goals,” she said.

Most taxpayers with income reported on W-2 or 1099 forms can have their returns done by the volunteers. Volunteers do not prepare returns with farm or rental income, or in certain other complex situations. Taxpayers with business or self-employment income can be served if they do not carry inventory, use depreciation, deduct for business use of their home, or have more than $25,000 in business expenses. Taxpayers with low to moderate incomes are eligible – anyone up to $44,000 and families with two or more children up to $54,000.
