Stenger resigns

WC?school board member was arrested for two felonies

Paul Stenger, 64

A Webster City school board member who was arrested earlier this week on charges of second degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child, has submitted his resignation to school officials.

Superintendent Mike Sherwood confirmed Thursday morning that he had received the resignation from Paul S. Stenger, 64, Webster City. Sherwood said the resignation is effective immediately and does not require any action by the school board.

“The district, in accordance with Iowa Code, will be publishing a notice of the vacancy and the intention of the board to fill the vacancy by appointment,” Sherwood said. The matter is on the agenda for Monday night’s school board meeting.

Stenger was elected to the school board in September 2015.

The Webster City Police Department arrested Stenger Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations involving the defendant and an accuser who is less than 18 years old.

The Iowa Code defines second-degree sexual abuse as either involving someone who is younger than 12 years old, uses a dangerous weapon or threatens the victim, or the alleged act involves more than one person committing the abuse.

Stenger made his initial appearance in Hamilton County Magistrate Court Tuesday morning. He was released from the Hamilton County Jail with supervision to the Department of Correctional Services.

This means he did not have to post bond, but is required to sign up for pre-trial supervision.

In addition, a no-contact order was issued between Stenger and the alleged victim.

His preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 20.
