Service set for child
A?4-year-old Elgin boy who died Friday as a result of an accidental shooting is the son of former Webster City resident, Nikita Choate.
Jayden Jawan Choate is also the grandson of David and Marla Choate of Webster City, according to an online obituary posted at bomanfh.com.
Graveside services for family and close friends will be held at Paton Township Cemetery in Paton, according to the obituary.
The child died Friday after he was rushed to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Police said they believe he shot himself around 2:30 p.m. A?Waterloo?television station reported that the state medical examiner’s office confirmed that Jayden died from a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to be accidental.
Jayden was a guest at the trailer home in the 200 block of Main Street and was with his 2-year-old brother and 5-month-old sister when the shooting happened, according to the Des Moines Register. No adults were inside the home when the shooting occurred.
Elgin residents gathered in a community park for a candlelight vigil in Jayden’s memory Sunday. His mother and her boyfriend, Branden Schrag, reportedly were in attendance at the vigil.
Jayden was born Oct. 21, 2011 in Des Moines. He had just finished 4-year-old preschool, according to the obituary.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the state medical examiner’s office and the Iowa Department of Human Services are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
