Green gardens

As the temperatures rise, it’s time to start thinking about outdoor gardens and landscaping ideas. Looking for a special way to bring life and creativity to an outdoor space? Register for Legacy Learning Boone River Valley’s ‘Tufa Troughs and Planters for the Garden’ class April 16.

Join instructor Richard Carlson at the Produce Station Pottery from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday to make two one-of-a-kind decorative planters. Carlson is well-known throughout the region for his gardening expertise and innovative gardening containers.

“We’re lucky to have Richard Carlson as an instructor for this course,” said Produce Station Pottery owner Maureen Seamonds, “he is such a generous teacher.”

Students will have the opportunity to create a hypertufa garden trough and a tufa bowl with a stone-like material which mimics a type of rock. Tufa troughs are made of a cement mixture that is designed to withstand the outdoor elements and are lighter than regular cement planters.

Participants can add creative carved surface embellishments to their lightweight planters. According to a LLBRV handout, Tufa troughs are well-known for their superior drainage and are great for a variety of different plants. The troughs are especially beneficial for succulents.

“It’s going to be great fun,” said Seamonds, “I think there is a real interest in container gardening.”

Cost for the class is $35 and includes all necessary materials. Register for the course at www.legacylearningbrv.org.

‘Experimenting with Painting Media’ is another upcoming LLBRV class. April 19-21 at Briggs Woods Golf Course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to make art and learn about different painting mediums. The cost is $90.
