FD Choral Society to present ‘Christmas Past’ on Dec. 17
Jive for Five Brass Quintet to also perform
FORT DODGE –The Fort Dodge Choral Society’s next concert will feature some of the songs performed at its very first Christmas concert during the show titled, “Christmas Past.”
“For the Christmas concert, we will continue with celebrating the 50th anniversary by going back to recreate the Choral Society’s first Christmas concert,” said Bruce Perry, the society’s conductor.
The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 17 in the First United Methodist Church, 127 N. 10th St. There will be a reception featuring Christmas carols and cookies beginning at 2 p.m. in the church.
Some of the past songs will include Francis Poulenc’s “Gloria” and Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata.”
“These are both very beautiful pieces of music, and it is nice to go back and revisit the Choral Society’s beginning,” Perry said.
Jive for Five Brass Quintet will also join the Choral Society to present the original concert program, coupled with other works for brass and choir.
The brass quintet is made up of various band directors in the Fort Dodge area. In the quintet are Tim Miller on first trumpet, David Swaroff on second trumpet, Kathy Yoakam on French horn, Dan Cassady on trombone, and Paul Bloomquist on tuba.
“This gives everyone in the community a great opportunity to come and be together to celebrate the joy of Christmas,” Perry said.
The Choral Society is one of the oldest community groups dedicated to the performance of fine choral literature in the state of Iowa.
The FDCS is made up of people from the Fort Dodge area. The group was organized in the spring of 1968 by individuals who were interested in providing an opportunity for the study and performance of challenging sacred and secular choral music compositions.
“We have a very rich cultural environment in Fort Dodge, and everyone around the community contributes so much to the arts,” Perry said. “Some of the community’s finest singers are members of the Choral Society and they come from all walks of life.”
