Twelve Webster City High School students will be auditioning for All-State on October 21.

Band students auditioning include Kaitlynn Seeley on flute, Kate Hollander on flute, and Ursula Leksell on clarinet.

Choir students auditioning include: Daniel Blankenship, Gianna Borer, Kevon Edwards, Isabelle Hooker, Haley Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Kylie Lantz, McKenna Mitchell and Elycia Obrecht.

For band students, the audition includes a selection from a prepared solo, two etudes — a challenging exercise in technique — and 13 scales. Students are told by the judge in the audition room what parts of the etudes and what scales to play, so they must be very well-prepared on everything.

Choir students have been practicing seven All-State songs since August.

At 5:00 a.m. of the audition day, cuts will be announced — seven minutes’ worth of selections from the various pieces. Before that time, no one knows what will be picked, so the goal is to work as hard as possible on all the material.

Auditions will take place at Hampton-Dumont High School and results are announced throughout the day. Students who make All-State take part in the All-State concert held in November and aired on IPTV over Thanksgiving weekend.
