An appreciation for art and nature

A combination of an appreciation for art and nature brought non-profit Legacy Learning Boone River Valley together. Through grants, donations, and volunteers this organization brings accredited artists from all over to teach, inspire and educate.

A non-profit since 2014, Legacy Learning has offered pottery, historical crafts, cooking and outdoor activities to preserve the region’s history and bring people to Webster City and all it has to offer. The natural resources that Hamilton County boasts are a key element of what board members would like to celebrate and preserve. “You want a full compliment of things to suit multiple interests and ages,” said board member Maureen Seamonds. She, along with board members Rusty Bever, Mike Brandrup, Sharon Cline, Jean Eells and Keri Rojas, are passionate about using the natural environment this area has to offer to support and enhance the community.

Classes are held in different locations around the area dependent on the type of class. Briggs Woods, All Cultures Equal, the Produce Station and Iowa Central Community College are all sites used. Legacy Learning prides their organization with bringing in quality instructors who are skilled in anything from pottery and sculpture to photography and outdoor events. Board members want people to have a quality experience and the time to enjoy what they are learning. “Webster City becomes a destination where you can expand learning” and that it is “fun to see development when the concept is regional,” added Seamonds, “Small towns have the opportunity to be vibrant and have their place in the sun.”

The next event is this month. Ty Smedes will be instructing an outdoor photography class at the Hamilton County Conservation Office on Aug. 18. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at a cost of $60.
